Root canal treatment is required to save a tooth when the tooth becomes badly infected or decayed.

During a root canal, the dentist must remove the nerve and pulp and clean the inside of the tooth, sealing it to prevent infection from spreading and causing an abscess.  An abscess occurs when a pocket of pus forms from bacteria, causing a painful infection which leads to tooth, jaw and facial pain.

A root canal treatment may be required in the following situations:

  • Tooth decay which leads to infection
  • Serious gum disease-causing infection
  • Trauma from a physical blow to the mouth
  • Tension from constant rubbing of misaligned teeth

Regardless of the cause, when the pulp of the tooth becomes infected from bacteria, patients experience extreme pain and even swelling of the face. When deterioration of the tooth pulp occurs, patients may also experience excruciating pain which radiates to the head. Serious infections can further impact the bone which leads to destruction of the bones surrounding the teeth.

How is a Root Canal Performed?

The first thing the dentist will do is inject an anesthetic into the area surrounding the infected tooth to numb the area. A rubber dam is used to prevent the infection from spreading into other areas before the dentist creates the opening to reach the nerve of the tooth. The infected nerve or pulp of the tooth is removed, the area is cleaned, shaped and may be permanently sealed to prevent further infection.

Depending on the level of infection, the dentist may close the opening with a temporary filling or leave the opening to drain further infectious material.  The experienced dentists at Breslau Smiles Family Dentistry will consult with you on the best option for you to treat and prevent infection and save your tooth.  If you require an additional appointment to complete the procedure, you may need to come back to sterilize the tooth area and further eliminate any bacteria.  We’ll take X-rays as required to ensure a complete and satisfactory outcome which eliminates all infection and alleviates your pain.
